Default Mismatched "Mil. Spec?"

I bought a brand new, in box Springfield "Mil. Spec." When I got around to stripping it down and noticed the s/n on the slide was different than the frame. It had the last 3 digits of the slides s/n machine penciled in another spot on the slide. The slide and frame are tight, no rattle whatsoever. I'm not complaining, just curious. Do they forge them in Brazil with one #, and assemble them here with another? I also noticed my frame s/n starts "NM," while the slide # was "M." Any body familiar with these? TJ

Just pulled my slide.....it's exactly as you describe. No idea what else it means though.

I called their customer service and they said that the slide is made under an assembly number where it's forged (Brazil, "M") and when it get to Illinois they take a slide, match it up with a frame and THAT's the s/n of the gun ("NM"). It's electric penciled on the bottom of the slide to match the frame. Nothing to worry about. Just seems strange that they don't stamp it in, but that's how they do it. No worries. TJ

Ahhhhhhhhh okay. Works for me.

Well, you taught me my one thing for the day. Thanks

I'd noticed the last 3 #'s of the SN were etched under the slide, but never really thought much about it.

Now if anybody asks I can square them away....because otherwise I'd of just said, "because that's how they roll in Brazil". haha

Hi Teejay..I "think" I saw this on another forum (1911)

Thanks to Delta for verifying his is similar. If the slides are delivered as "finished" for the most part...I can see using a "pencil scribe or etc" to mark..vs the "peening" or
such of a punch...by individuals who did not "make " the slide...if you see where I am going.....its one thing to final fit, another to have individuals rehammer a good slide -before or after fitting...? I dont know...just one thought...

But..yes...you would think they would do same numbers after fit...etc...but , you can bet there is either a "corporate" scheme involved per this inventory style or a FEd or state...etc...I will bet...

regards,

Yeah, I posted on a couple other sites to see what kind of response I'd get. Delta's reply helped alleviate some of my "did I get screwed" paranoia. Still doesn't make sense to roll or punch one s/n in the proper position and then electric pencil the last three numbers of the frame on the highest landing. Your guess is as good as mine. TJ
