What you say is very true, Delta. Patton once said that if he commanded an army between a German force and a Russian force, he would attack in two directions. Yes, he was something of a loose cannon in a way, but in light of the events that followed WWII, he was also right concerning the Soviet threat.

Yes, exactly...he was right...and unpopular for it. We have 60 years to prove him right!
Also... To say that Patton did not want to lead his divisions into a new war is like to say that a whore would not take your money. Patton was a real warrior...but with stars. He lusted for cold smoking dawn victory, melting enemy armor, the chaos of scattering an enemy command, and a motivated mechanized clash like a fat kid lusts for cake.

What is even more interesting about him, Delta, is that no one could justly call him a "rear area" general." Those who refer to him as "Old Blood and Guts" always seem to forget that he was also a highly decorated combat soldier in his own right.

One of my favorite stories about him or his quotes I guess is, two "forward observers" were alongside him during a moving column, and one had questioned how to find the enemy or their lines.....
" Well son, just go on up thataway till the bastards start shootin at you...! "...

Yes, true that.
My grandfather spoke of him a few times amongst my great-uncles at an Ozark deer camp, smoke and bourbon in the hands, around one fire; those among his 11 siblings and the ones that married into the family. They had served down to the man, either in Europe or the Pacific, in "the last real war", in different capacities. One that stuck in my memory was that they began marching on a road after a battle, and at dawn they, my grandfather's unit, passed General Patton, standing up in a jeep, watching them walk by. So he was there, at the point of the thrust. There were many stories about that general. I was so young that I couldn't put a name to a face....my own father and uncles were younger men than I am now.

An interesting guy for sure.
I get the idea he would really have been as at home on an ancient battlefield as he was in WW2 and no doubt would be in Afghanistan today. A soldiers soldier though? Perhaps not.
